Women in Rotary

Happy women's day

Happy (belated) Women’s Day! ~ March 8 is the international day of recognizing the role women play in life.
In 1986 women were finally admitted to Rotary’s membership rolls although they had roles in Rotary for many years before that.
More need to be done. In 2013 Rotary’s membership was comprised of 15% women. I daresay the world’s human population is a slight bit higher than that – 3+ times!

New Members Induction Ceremony

While 2 may not seem like a significant number in an organization of 1.2M, but when it amounts to what makes it 1/4 of your active membership when they are inducted as members of the RC Portland-Westside, it is significant and notable. On Tuesday evening, April 1, 2014 starting at 6:30, we gather at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Tanasbourne to bring one active and one honorary member into the fold. Adam and Sarah Branch

Adam Ross Branch bleeds Rotarian red, coming from a family of Rotarians, with his grandfather being a charter member of the Roseburg Club in District 5110.  Adam has a background in finance and insurance. he and his wife Sarah and their two children call Hillsboro home.

Adam has an interest in developing membership so he will take over that chair.

Bilbo (yes Baggins) Ballard is my son of almost 40 years.  When I made the decision to ride across country on the “Pledge-A-Penny to End Polio Now Bicycle Odyssey” last year, he offered to keep me company.  2,901 miles in 55 days, raising $2,700 and meeting several family members, most for the first time ever, we returned to the great northwest.

Bilbo has 5 sons ranging in age 17-3 and he is settling his affairs so he can spend more time with them.

Being an honorary member is of great pride to him and an important step in making the commitment to put Service Above Self.

Polio in Pakistan

Rotary Club of Portland-Westside:

It takes more than money to end polio. People are dying out of ignorance, fear and prejudice. If there was more I could do, I would.

Originally posted on Curiosities of John Castle:

Outbreaks of polio in Peshawar, Pakistan threaten the efforts of vaccinators worldwide. The northern Pakistani city is considered the Polio capital of the world by the World Health Organization. Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only other countries still plagued by polio. However, Pakistan beats them all. In 2012 Pakistan reported 58 polio cases last year 92 cases, and five new cases in the first month of this year.

Many cases across the world can be traced back to Peshawar. 90 percent of polio cases in Pakistan have their roots in Peshawar, and cases now threaten areas that were once polio free like Egypt and Syria. In fact 12 of 13 polio cases in Afghanistan were traced back to Peshawar.

But the question remains; why this city? What makes it different from other areas of the world? the current problem lies with militant extremists. On Sunday a bomb went off near…

 December is Family Month

The idea of the family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December
 during
 Family
 Month.
 Every
 Rotarian
 is
 part
of
the
Rotary
 family–
but our family is much larger than the 1.2 million members.
The family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women and children who are involved in our work: the spouses and children of our members, our Rotary Foundation program participants and alumni, and all of those who are part of our programs in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world.”

~ 2009 District 6540 Governor Floyd Lancia

ImageWe lost a member of our family less than 2 weeks ago.

Rotarian Harvey Thomas was the ‘old man of Rotary’ for our club, in that he had been a member of that club since he became a Rotarian in 1985. Any Rotary facts I needed to know, I would just ‘ask Harvey.’ He introduced me to Rotary and I will be eternally grateful to him.

His wife Roberta is surrounded by family in this difficult time, and remains in relatively good spirits. A memorial service will be held for Harvey after the new year and we’ll pass along the invitations here.

Here are some comments about Harvey from other friends and Rotarians:

My deepest sympathy to your club members. I can only imagine what a loss and shock this must be to all of you”….DG Sharon Starr

I knew him for a long time. He just delivered roses here and to my wife at her school last week. How sad”….Denny Doyle, Mayor of Beaverton Oregon.

“From when he was our Interact advisor at ISB high school and beyond, Harvey has been very, very kind to my classmates me. If it were not for Harvey I wouldn’t be as far as I am now in my growing career. My deep gratitude goes to Harvey”….Godfrey Yeung, ISB Interact Alumnus

So saddened to hear of Harvey’s death. We went to college together and were reunited through Rotary. He was a true example of “Service above Self”….Lynne Wintermute, RC Lake Oswego

“This is a deep loss for Rotary and all of Harvey’s friends. His commitment to Interact stands out in my mind. He was the photographer at our daughter’s wedding. Our deepest sympathy and affection to Roberta at this difficult time”….Sue Yselida, RC Tigard

So very sorry to hear of Harvey’s passing! He was definitely a committed and engaged Rotarian. He will be dearly missed by those of us who knew and worked with him. A loss for our District but most especially for his fellow members of the RC of Portland-Westside”….PDG Mike Caruso

Aloha-Huber Kinnaman School Food & Toy Drive Going Strong

ImageNearly full barrel @ Lupe’s Escape

For the past month, Vertigo Brewing Co. in Hillsboro, Cascade Brewing Co. in Beaverton, and Lupe’s Escape Restaurant in Aloha, have hosted barrels in their lobbies to collect non-perishable food and new, unwrapped toys as part of our drive to collect and provide them for 80 families of the 2 schools in the district we serve.

The drive officially ends on December 18th so you still have time to make your donation and support local business at the same time.

Help Wanted: On Friday, December 20, starting at 3:30 PM at the Kinnaman School cafeteria, volunteers are needed to sort the collected food and toys into 80 ‘family sized’ portions for delivery the next morning, which leads me to:

Help Wanted: On Saturday, December 21, starting at 8:00 AM at the same location. Driver/delivery teams are needed to deliver those 80 family sized portions. The total weight will be in the neighborhood of 30-40 pounds, so 2 person teams are suggested.

Food and beverages will be provided at both events.

His wife, Roberta, wrote, “I want you all to know that Harvey passed away shortly after 10 pm Thursday. He had been in good health”
FHarvey Thomas, Rotarianuneral and memorial arrangements are to be determined, but that information will be shared here and other media.
